This book presents the altarpieces, chapels and altars of the Church of San Ignacio in Bogotá, Colombia. One of the treasures of the Society of Jesus in the country.

It is part of the series, edited by the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and Villegas Editores, which has captured the cultural heritage of the Society of Jesus in Bogotá.

The book Iglesia de San Ignacio Bogotá - Volume II: Altarpieces, chapels and altars (2019) includes the movable work that is on view, for example the High Altar along with the twelve altars that are distributed on the eastern and western sides, the pulpit, and the chapels.

Through the aesthetic expressions of baroque art, Jesuit catechesis taught the faithful the intrinsic relationship between prayer, symbols and art. For example, the use not only of the altarpiece as a resource, but also of a recognizable iconography and a gestural code found in the representations of the saints.

    Authors

    The curatorship and the main texts are by the historian, restorer and teacher María Constanza Villalobos ; and the photographs of visual designer and photographer Andrés Mauricio López .

    The book is also complemented by texts by Jorge Humberto Peláez Piedrahita, SJ , Rector of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana; In addition, texts by Germán Bernal Londoño, SJ , professor, specialist in Liturgy and rector of the Church of San Ignacio, are presented; Lina Constanza Beltrán Beltrán architect and master in Restoration of Architectural Monuments; and Yolanda Pachón Acero and María Isabel Tello Fernández , university professor, architect and master in Restoration.

    This collection is preceded by the book Santiago Páramo and the chapel of San José - Iglesia de San Ignacio Bogotá (2013) . About the chapel of San José, heart of the Church and the most harmonious religious artistic ensemble and best preserved in Colombia, and the author of its painting and ornamentation was the Jesuit Santiago Páramo.
