DESCRIPCIÓN

Maruca Gómez was born in Granada, Nicaragua, in 1923. Today, at 93 years old, she is still moved by her sculpture work, which she does in her home studio, with the help of Don Noel Flores, her teacher and friend to all. life.

Maruca has a long history in the arts in Nicaragua. He was a student at the School of Fine Arts in the sixties, then he went to study temporarily at the National Academy of Art in New York.

Although he began making human figures, shortly after he entered the world of his portraits/heads and his modern sculptures in which he uses materials such as: metal, wood, rubber, tires, plastic, paper, and objects of all kinds. Lately he has made sculpture for public spaces.

Parallel to the human figure and his portraits, Maruca has always played with modern sculpture. And what at first may have seemed like a distraction from the formative academic discipline, over time has become a serious effort, full of intentionality.

His first sculpture was that of the king and his girl, based on the poem by Rubén Darío that begins "Margarita, the sea is beautiful", and given by the Nicaraguan community to Costa Rica. His second sculpture would also be of a Darian motif. Heads of beautiful women from all over the world represent the poet's ode to love and beauty. The third sculpture, the face of Darío, who acts as a sentinel on Lake Granada, has the proportions of a monument, but allows the poet's features to be appreciated very closely. The fourth represents Saint Francis and the wolf from “The Motifs of the Wolf”, another poem by Dario. The fifth and last is Santo Domingo, patron saint of Managua, a gift that Maruca made to the Santo Domingo neighborhood, where she lives.

As a working system in the case of the heads, Maruca begins by modeling the clay from photographs, and when the head is advanced he finishes it with the present model. Then it goes on to make the mold and the figure in plaster to, finally, send it to Costa Rica, where the bronze casting process is carried out.
