The Álvaro Gómez Hurtado Foundation and the Sergio Arboleda University, with the purpose of commemorating the centenary of the birth of Dr. Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, present, in the five volumes that make up this collection, his biographical and intellectual profile and a compilation of his most relevant texts. One of the 5 volumes corresponds to an extensive biographical review of the character and his father, written by Juan Esteban Constaín.

Remembering who Álvaro Gómez was is the best tribute to his memory. It is known that his life and work contributed fundamentally to the construction of our country and our history. In doing so, we exercise a pedagogy so that the new generations learn their legacy and the previous ones do not forget it.

Álvaro Gómez Hurtado was a multifaceted man, who distinguished himself as a journalist, politician, statesman, humanist, in love with art and, of course, as an extraordinary human being.

“A thinker in the universal sense of the word, that is, a philosopher who had for himself a total and coherent explanation of man and the world in which he lives. Nothing, no being or activity was indifferent to him, says Raimundo Emiliani Román..

Perhaps his best-known facet is that of the politician, an exercise in which he acted from a very young age in positions of popular election, from councilor to senator. He was First Appointed to the Presidency of the Republic and three times a candidate for it, but his ability to do politics and influence it transcended these positions and the campaigns to run for them.

No one was more decisive, nor was any opinion taken into account more than his, when it came to making momentous decisions for the country.

In his most widespread work, The Revolution in America, he affirms, for example, that the denial of our Hispanic cultural identity and, consequently, Western, is reflected in the lack of an identity of its own in Hispanic America and in the insecurity to adopt permanent institutions. , reflected in the proliferation and transience of our political Constitutions.

On November 2, 1995, when Sergio Arboleda left the University, murderous bullets ended his life. José del Cristo Huertas, his assistant, killed by his side that day, carried in his pockets the cassette containing the last class given minutes before the heinous crime. Crime that still remains in impunity.

Juan Esteban Constaín, Colombian historian and writer, who selected the published works of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, was born in Popayán, Colombia, in 1979. In 2004 he published his first book Los mártires, a series of fictions about writers. In 2007 El naufragio del Imperio, and, in 2010, Calcio!, with which he won the Espartaco Award for Historical Novel at Gijón's Black Week. In May 2014, he published The Man Who Wasn't Thursday, which earned him the Colombian Narrative Library Award. He is a columnist for the newspaper El Tiempo and a teacher and researcher at the Faculty of International Relations at the Universidad del Rosario..
