But it is not done by just anyone: Gerardo Reichel-Dolmatoff (1913-1994), a pioneer of anthropology and archaeology in the country, was—along with his partner Alicia Dussán—the most prominent researcher of both the past and present of Colombian cultures and peoples, and internationally recognized for his scientific work, his contribution to ethnographic social sciences, and his academic work.
The moving photographic selection, begun in 1940, stands out not only as a scientific document, as a testimony to ethnic groups, customs, and environments—many of them disappeared—but also for the aesthetic sensibility of the photographer, his integration and respect for the original Colombians, and the vindication of their struggle to keep their traditions alive.
