This collector's item is the result of the friendship and complicity between artist Gonzalo Ariza and editor Benjamín Villegas. Beyond being a luxury edition, it represents a challenge for editorial production: for the book to become another one of the artist's works, embodying his spirit, sensitivity, and his unique vision of the universe. The Bogotá painter Gonzalo Ariza (1912-1995) was —and continues to be— one of the most prominent nature artists and the last of the great Colombian landscape painters of the 20th century. His life journey is as surprising as his subtle yet impactful work: he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Bogotá, and in 1936 he traveled to Japan where he studied lithography, woodcutting, and metal engraving at the Tokio Koto Kogei Gakko, and took watercolor classes at Tsuguharu Foujita's Workshop. As he himself declared: "My most important experience was contact with a living culture, where art is not a museum piece but an activity of daily life, authentic folk art, found in painting, in gardens, in theater, in the tea ceremony." Both in technique and spirituality, he was influenced by the Far East, creating his own style that captures the light, cloudiness, flora, and atmosphere of different Colombian landscapes, but enveloped in the mysticism of Eastern wisdom. And this gem of a book captures it, from the fabric box with clasps and a landscape print; the book, with a cloud forest landscape printed on its cover and the refined interior design.
